Knitting and Crochet Blog Week - Day 3 Tidy Mind, Tidy Stitches

Day Three:  Tidy mind, tidy stitches.

How do you keep your yarn wrangling organized? It seems like an easy to answer question at first, but in fact organization exists on many levels. Maybe you are truly not organized at all, in which case I am personally daring you to try and photograph your stash in whatever locations you can find the individual skeins. However, if you are organized, blog about an aspect of that organization process, whether that be a particularly neat and tidy knitting bag, a decorative display of your crochet hooks, your organized stash or your project and stash pages on Ravelry.

My stash is not organized! (at least like most knitters I know)  I buy most of my yarn as I start projects.  I can fit all of my store bought yarn in one box (which is not sorted an any particular order but...can be looked through in a matter of seconds).  Now...my handspun yarn and roving along with raw fiber is a totally different story.  I have a barn, a fiber studio, a farm store, another barn, a pool house, a pasture and a living room full of fiber.  I even left my handspun on a pool floaty last summer during the Tour de Fleece. (ok, in reality, this was for a poolside knitting photo op but I couldn't resist.)

I've attempted to photograph my stash and put it on Ravelry but...even when I have it in my stash I forget to link it to projects.  Again, since the majority of my knitting uses my handspun it's not as big of a deal.  So that's my stash....visit my farm store or visit my pool house and you will most likely find yarn just...floating around.

Now for true inspiration...visit my pasture.  My contribution for Fiber Wordless Wednesday is  a couple photos of Buccaneer and Pedro playing in the pasture.  This was from last Spring before shearing.  These are the two boys you see in the header of my blog too.  They are two of the first five boys I bought for my farm and they are near and dear to me.  In these photos they are pronking and just having a good time.  Sometimes the males Alpacas can fight and cause a lot of ruckus but these two were just being playful and I was fortunate to have my camera handy.

Finally, for WIP Wednesday, my contribution is a wee bit of weaving.  I am working on Leno Lace.  It's a finger weaving technique.  I also just cast on a sassy cowl that I'm knitting for a special friend...more photos and updates on that project next week.

  1. I like the floating yarn, and I like the fibre on the hoof even more (do alpacas' have hooves? I suspect not, feet like sheep?)

  2. I took over half of my husband's photo studio in the fall and it was a mess! Then I bought some shelves and cleaned up a bit. It is just hard to get organized with big bags of roving. I cannot figure out how to store them. Good topic! You should do a David Lettermen top ten ways to clean your fiber stash!

  3. The weaving looks awesome. I've been forcing myself not to start any new hobbies, like weaving or spinning. I just really don't have time; but it's always been an interest. You have far more room to store your stash then me. I have mine in boxes or bags in the basement on shelves sorted by color. I've tried taking a picture or two down there, but it's a real basement not a rec room so it always looks like a dungeon and makes a nasty picture.

  4. The picture of the yarn in the floatie is too funny! I have the same problem with keeping up with the yarn stash in ravelry. Maybe someday. Your alpacas look like they are having a grand time. Great pics!

  5. I also have a hard time loading everything onto ravelry, lol. Love the yarn on the floaty. When I read the blog topic today, I looked around my craft room and living room, and went, "Hmm... I need to put all this back on the shelves! hehe"

  6. Ok, floating in the pool? Gotta love that! And the two boys playing - what a great shot. Isn't it an issue about the camera thing? You want to be able to snap those moments, but always carrying around the camera (especially on a farm) can be impractical. :)

I will never post my stash on Ravelry. Pfft to that. :)

  8. So, I could say that I try to be organized - I also try and keep the stash down to what can fit in our storage ottoman. But, the stash grew out of that last year :) If only I had a pool house...seems like such a perfect spot to squirrel away some yarn (and fiber)

  10. If I walked into your stall, I would be in so much trouble......I think I would need to have one of each!
I love your weaving! And those furry critters of yours must be so much fun to watch!

  11. Those photos of the alpaca are great - I've never seen them "at play" like that. Your leno lace is lovely!

  12. That is so cool that you can have your own source of fiber right from your animals. Methinks I may have to start gathering my dog's hair again, hahaha. I have an Alaskan Malamute and I thought it might be fun to try and make something from that, we shall see.

  13. Alpaca's are super cute and I love spinning their fleece, your ones look lovely.
Like you I do find fiber hard to organize and stash. I have it in huge sealed tubs but unlike yarn which can be sorted by ply or colour fiber just gets disorganized.. well mine does anyway ! lol
    I say don't even try it's a battle one can't beat...ahahaha

  14. I think my stash will be floating out the door and down the paddock soon if I don't get into some spinning :-)
