Welcome to Fiber Arts Friday! Knit, Weave, Spin, Crochet, Sew, Felt, Dye are all parts of the Fiber Arts Fun we share each week so what are you waiting for? Join in the fun and share you Fiber Arts Adventures. This week has been a tough one for me. The Neti Pot has been my best friend as I've battled the change of season allergies. Argh! When you don't feel good you typically don't want to do much. Of course, I'm not your typical gal.I've been busy spinning every night before bed which really does relax me and put me in the happy frame of mind to sleep. Literally before I went to bed last night I finished plying 8oz of 2-ply yarn in my Suri Alpaca Blend which ended up giving me 452 yards. I have also been busy knitting at lunch each day. I am finally working on the heel for the Shelter socks I started awhile back. These are my on-the-go knit so progress has been slow. I switched from my Studio June Shelter yarn to Shibui yarn for the heel and toe since the red is almost the same and really puts a POP on the color. Once I turn the heel, I will simply knit the foot.
I did get a chance for some extra knitting on Wednesday night. I needed to visit the Secretary of State office for my driver's license renewal. Apparently I can't keep the photo from when I "really was 29" so I had to brave the crowds to get the renewal. When I arrived, they were just calling number 63. I picked number 97. Good thing I had my knitting with me. It wasn't long and I had a crowd of people around me watching me knit, asking me questions about knitting and giving me all of their excuses why they don't knit but do various other crafts even though I don't remember asking (yes, that was the sinus thing making me testy). I am so used to knitting in public that I just take it for granted that most people aren't exposed to knitters.
Of course, the lady next to me then noticed the socks I was wearing. Yes, my first pair of hand-knitted socks. MY SOCKS! It has finally been cool enough that I could start wearing socks. So there I was in the Secretary of State's office in my dress slacks and shirt with my hand-knitted socks and Birks. Yes, I'm not quite the picture perfect office professional but I sure am picture perfect. Oh yeah! Now the conversation went from me knitting to what I have knitted. Before long I had completed quite a few rows plus kept everyone around me entertained and slowly all of our numbers were called. There was a day, not so long ago, when I didn't know how to knit and I would be the impatient gal waiting for my number to get called. Now that knitting is in my life I don't mind the wait...or the attention. Ok, I have always loved the attention but that's a whole different story. Now...share your adventures in Fiber Arts.

That's amazing you drew a crowd with your knitting. I go into NYC a lot and always bring knitting with me for the train and waiting rooms. Although I do occasionally get someone to talk to me, many NY'ers are too busy staring into their smartphones to notice anything else.
ReplyDeleteLove your new socks. I still have to figure out how to do them on circs. For some reason I haven't been able to teach myself. Did you teach yourself or take class?
Happy Friday! Your socks are awesome. Isn't it nice how such an innocuous past time as knitting can cause such a stir? I really don't know what I'd do if I had to wait somewhere and didn't have something to knit. Congrats on your first pair of socks...I see it won't be the last.
ReplyDeleteIt's funny, people tend to avoid me when I knit in public (they do stare a lot though!)
ReplyDeleteSeriously awesome socks. I get very twitchy if I have to wait for a long time somewhere and have forgotten my knitting
ReplyDeleteHi Andrea! You have made so beautiful socks! It's so enjoyable and relaxing to knit!
ReplyDeleteHave a great weekend!
xxx Teje
Loving the socks! They look super, the one you have on the needles really pops! Allergies stink, hope the cool down has helped. (Yep, see you at Sue's!)
ReplyDeleteI love when little kids are fascinated by the knitting and ask questions. Isn't it odd how people always have to tell you they just don't have "time" to knit. Yet, there they are, sitting and waiting just like you. LOL!
ReplyDeleteYippy for cooler sock weather! They look sassy in those sandals!
ReplyDeleteHmmm DMV Knitting Demo eh? Sounds like you were probably talking more than knitting.
This post could also be entitled "How to Sanely Get Through Waiting to Renew Your License Without Really Trying" :) Almost 30 numbers? I'd have been screaming on the inside! And then I, too, would have pulled out some needlework - crochet, most likely.
ReplyDeleteCongrats on the socks. There's a Pemco Insurance Co. commercial entitled "Socks and Sandals Guy" (and guy in the general sense) - it's got you written all over it.
P.S. - go for the hemp spin! A back washer would be cool to weave. Just know that the hemp will soften with use and washing.
I'm the same way about using knitting to help me get through waiting, I am very rarely bored any more! Those socks are incredible and I truly can't believe they're your first- you are quite a knitter!
ReplyDeleteUgh. I have to go to the DMV very soon too. I keep putting it off, but I'm running out of time. ;-/
ReplyDeleteI was just thinking the same thing about waiting and knitting yesterday during my airport wait. I made quite a lot of progress on my scarf.
I feel my Neti Pot is just about the best invention ever. :-)
And of course, your socks are awesome!
Very cute socks, and I'm sure they go with everything!
ReplyDeleteCongratulations on Sister Bear's music playing. We are going to start marching band this year, looking forward to it!
I love it when my knitting in public draws a crowd. I love your new socks too! I can't wait to see them finished.
ReplyDeleteYour Walking on Sunshine socks are awesome. You beat me done girlfriend!
ReplyDeleteHappy Fiber Arts Friday!!
i have been busy making wreaths, cheers Marie
ReplyDeletePerfect time to finish those socks. it is freezing out! I think knitting at the Secretary of State's office is the perfect place. It is always so boring waiting there. Next time take your spinning wheel. I am sure that will drum up some conversation!!
ReplyDeleteSpinning before bed every night summons an interesting image!!
ReplyDelete:)
Love the socks and the Birkies :-) Allergies get to me at the change of seasons as well....sniff, sniff. Cool new socks too!
ReplyDeletePicture perfect, indeed!!
ReplyDeleteI love the socks, and the story! I think I only really knit in public on air planes, and this summer I had a co-conspirator a few aisles away. Knitting rules!!
ReplyDeleteEllen - I learned to knit with the two circs from KellyJ at Your Local Yarn Shop. I can't imagine using DPN's because this is super easy to control. I get very overwhelmed with magic loop too so the two circs are awesome.
ReplyDeleteLindsay - You know me too well...yes, I was talking more than knitting. It's who I am ;-)
Tamara - Sometimes I have been known to pull out my drop spindle. Yes, I am a true rockstar then.
As always, thank you to everyone who linked in and commented. I am so happy to have all of you in my life and enjoy reading all of your posts.
Cool blog! I'm a birkies kind of gal too. Looks like I will be up in Edwardsburg Michigan for a while in January and February. Do you ever have a visiting artist day? I'd love to come visit and meet your herd.
ReplyDeleteI LOVE being able to knit while waiting for something (like in line at the DMV). In a weird way, I don't even mind the wait because it gives me a chance to knit!
