Fiber Arts Friday - I Love Yarn Day!

Welcome to Fiber Arts Friday!  Did you know today is "I Love Yarn Day"?  I love that I Love Yarn Day falls on Fiber Arts Friday.  So what do you love about yarn?  Well, my answer falls on the line of, "Is the sky blue?"  What is there not to love about yarn?  Seriously, I can't walk past a skein of yarn without touching it.

Check out the website created by the Craft Yarn Council for suggestions on what you can do with yarn.  Knit or crochet something for charity?  Gather with friends to enjoy your favorite fiber art.   Me?  Well, I will be reading all of my favorite Fiber Arts Friday submissions (Thank you, in advance, for linking in) then heading to my favorite yarn shop to knit tonight.

I have cast on Antarctica.  I am using this as part of my Nerd Wars tournament submissions and...conquering  my fear of cables.  Yes, I know, cables aren't that bad but I've chosen to make them scary and now...I will take that fear away.  Seriously, I keep finding sassy cable patterns so I need to get over the intimidation and just knit it.

Finally, I submitted my Scientific Challenge aka the Prehistoric Challenge for Nerd Wars.  I spun a yarn for this challenge.  The challenge was to make something that pre-dated our history. Since I am on the Vampire team, I chose Ann Rice's Queen of the Damned for my Team Bite Me Inspiration since that was the beginning of vampires.  In my submission, I wrote a bit of vampire history and why I chose the colorway I did.  I think the yarn turned out great and soon it will be tagged and ready for me to take to Fiber Expo in two weeks.  Now...share your adventures in Fiber Arts then go out and enjoy I Love Yarn Day!

  11. Ooh, thanks for the heads-up about I Love Yarn day! I'll have to buy some new yarn to celebrate. ;)

And good luck with the cable-conquering! You've chosen a beautiful yarn to conquer with, and I hope the project will go wonderfully.

  12. Good luck with the cables! They are on my "conquer" list, too!

  13. Hmmm, I thought every day was I Love Yarn Day?

Good luck with the cables. A little practice and you'll wonder what all the fuss was about. Then you can join the Great Cable Debate: whether to use a cable needle or not :-)

  14. Spectacular yarn! And good for you for conquering your fear of cables. I hate to tell you this, but they're a little bit addicting. Next thing we know, you'll be cranking out a Beatnik! :)

  15. Oh the hat is very cute.

It's true, cables are really fun. After you finish that hat, you'll be making cable socks. ;-)

BTW, I had no idea that there was an official I Love Yarn Day, but it sounds like a good idea to me. :-D

  17. Andrea, maybe it's just me... but the last column of links are pushing off into the right margin. Is that fixable?

Thanks again for hosting Fiber Arts Friday!

  18. Well, I actually knew it was "officially" I Love Yarn Day, but I just didn't mention it because, like Marushka, every day is I Love Yarn day for me! Those crafty Craft Yarn Council folk. :)

In the meantime, your latest handspun is, as usual, wonderful. And once you make that cute beanie, you'll wonder what all the fuss was about cables. They are easy - really. :) Knit cables are the bomb.

  21. My most favorite thing about yarn is probably how soft it is. This is likely why I absotively-posilutely love alpaca.

  23. Cables are awesome! Eventually you'll be so fearless you won't use an extra needle to do the cable stitches. And, learn from my mistake: If you're making something with cables, it's going to look too big at first. As you progress, though, the knitted piece becomes smaller. the twisting and cabling draws in the fabric, just like ribbing does.

  24. Can't believe I didn't know it was I Love Yarn Day! (now it's marked on my calendar so I can never forget it again)

I think you're really going to like cables - enjoy!

  25. I love yarn today and every day :-) You'll love knitting cables, they look complicated but once you get the gist of it I'm sure you'll make every project on Ravelry with cables.
