So far I am really digging how Jacey has written the book. I have been spinning for a couple of years and didn't understand aspects of my wheel that she explained easily in two pages. I know more about my tension and the orifice that had been previously explained...and it makes sense. I am super excited to work my way through this book and DVD exploring new spinning techniques and finding new ways to understand and respect the fiber I enjoy. In a spinning project unrelated to the Spin Art book, I have completed another beautiful Alpaca blend yarn. Back in October, dear Heather sent me a braid of roving that was beautiful but just wasn't the best for felting. She knew that I would spin it into something beautiful and...I did. I kept enough of it to spin a bobbin by itself and the rest I ran through my drum carder with some of my brown and fawn Suri Alpaca. I LOVE the muted rainbow of the batt I created and the intensity of the colors in the roving she sent me. Even in the singles, you see the bright color. What surprised me (and it always does) was how much the color ended up getting muted once plied. I am still working on techniques to make that color POP more. I thought by keeping one of the singles the pure color with no brown or fawn it would help but it didn't as much as I had hoped. It's a lovely yarn none-the-less and will knit into something amazing.

I love seeing all that color first thing in the morning! It looks good in any combination. Isn't it fun to play with different fibers and colors and see what you get? They all have their place and use and it's all good. Thanks for getting us all together every week Andrea. You've cultivated a nice little community here and I've met so many nice and talented folks. Happy Fiber Arts Friday!
ReplyDeleteColor! It looks great when you blended it too. Hmm, I'll have to check out that book you suggested.
ReplyDeleteBeautiful - I love the blended colour you created with the fibre, so pretty :)
ReplyDeleteSo pretty - I haven't spun in forever and after seeing your pics (and reading the book review) my hands are itching to get to my wheel!!
ReplyDeleteThat finished yarn is absolutely beautiful. Great job. Thanks for sharing.
ReplyDeleteI would love to get my hands on that book. It looks like there is a lot of neat stuff in there.

ReplyDeleteSuch pretty yarn! I'm glad you have a new book to enjoy and learn from, hurray!
ReplyDeleteZippy! Awesome colors. I like the softer tone of the yarn. Nicely done.
ReplyDeleteVery gorgeous! Love those colors...hey the Hubs keeps talking about putting alpacas out on his parents land...he used to raise goats...there is probably about 20 acres for the house site..they had more, but have slowly sold it off...anyway it wouldn't be for awhile, but he has questions..the other day he asked how many would it take to make it profitable? Is it profitable or more of a "hobby" farm type? Hope you don't mind me asking..we do have an alpaca farm in town that he is thinking of going out to help with, so he gets to know the animal better..I know the owner through SnB meetings and have been out there a few times...
ReplyDeleteThe batt and yarn turned out great!
ReplyDeleteI would like to know my wheel better too. The book sounds like a good resource.
The colors are sooo pretty!
ReplyDeleteAndrea--I'm so happy to see that you've figured out a way to use that roving! I know that at the rate you learn, you will have assimilated that new book in no time, and your spinning will be all the better for it!!

ReplyDeleteLove your muted rainbow colorway. It's amazing how colors would seem to change depend on how they are arranged. It's such an art and science at the same time.
ReplyDeleteI love that recarded batt!!! And I'm with Vivian - I am intrigued with the way both spun up and how the color was impacted. Color is just so darn interesting. I'll look forward to seeing what you work up with all that lovely color. Just yummy with my morning coffee. :)
ReplyDeleteStunning. I want to learn to spin like you when I grow up! Can't wait to see what that yummy yarn turns into.
ReplyDeleteThat is some super awesome colorful fiber. As much as I already love it I look forward to seeing what you may do in the future to add in even more "pop".
ReplyDeleteYour handspun just seems to get prettier and prettier, Andrea!
ReplyDeleteI've been ogling items in your etsy shop today. Gorgeous stuff!

ReplyDeleteBeautiful spinning. I love rainbow yarns, both the bright and the muted versions are gorgeous
ReplyDeleteBeautiful yarns and I love the colors. I dare not take up spinning or all attempts at working my way through my growing stash will be lost forever!
ReplyDeleteThe colors in your yarn are just gorgeous. It rather echoes the colors on your blog page in a muted version. How luscious!

ReplyDeleteLOVE LOVE LOVE!
ReplyDeleteAhhh a spinning book I don't have ... thanks@!
ReplyDeleteLovely yarn, as always. I love the rainbow colors in the braid. Very festive on such a dull January day!
Hooray for good books that explain things clearly and make you feel like you know more. Also, hooray for gorgeous, gorgeous rainbow yarn. I can't wait to see what you knit it into.
ReplyDeleteI love how that batt spun up with the browns thru the gorgeous colour! I got my book from Jacey as well and am loving all the fab photos and how she has written each section. I have her Sit and Spin DVD but she seems to have gone into more detail this time round....can't wait for school hols to end so I can get in some spin time. Enjoy your book :-)
